Plot Structure in Susan Glaspells Trifles :: Trifles Essays
Plot Structure in Susan Glaspell's Trifles The play "Trifles" by Susan Glaspell is a whodunit type of murder mystery. But in this case, the "professionals," whose job it is to find out what happened, failed in their task. The County Attorney (Mr. Henderson) and the Sheriff (Mr. Peters) attempt to piece together what had transpired on the day when John Wright was murdered. They interviewed Mrs. Hale, Mrs. Peters, and Mr. Hale who told them that Mrs. Wright, John's wife, had been acting strange when he had found her in the kitchen. After taking in all of this information, they left Mrs. Peters and Mrs. Hale in the kitchen. Instead of focusing on the men and their quest to solve the case, Glaspell concentrates on the women in the kitchen. It is at this point, when the men leave the kitchen and go upstairs, that the women begin to, perhaps inadvertently, find out for themselves who had killed John Wright. I believe the rising action of this play begins when the men leave the women alone in the kitchen. Without even knowing it, the women are using the tactics that a trained detective would use: asking many questions and making inferences. They engage in small talk and comment on how the kitchen was left after the murder. For example, when Mrs. Peters was looking through the cupboard, she discovered that Mrs. Wright had a bread set. Mrs. Hale then concludes that "she was going to put this in here," referring to a loaf of bread beside the breadbox. Another example is when Mrs. Peters noticed that Mrs. Wright had been "piecing a quilt." As the two women are wondering whether she was going to "quilt it or kno t it," the men come down the stairs and overhear them. The Sheriff repeats out loud what he had heard them say and the men all laugh, obviously making fun of the women. This situation is interesting because the men have no idea that the women were actually making valuable conclusions. I think the next line that Mrs. Hale says is very important: "I don't know as there's anything so strange, our takin' up our time with little things while we're waiting for them to get the evidence. I don't see as it's anything to laugh about." This line shows that even the women themselves believe that they are not finding anything of importance.

A manââ¬â¢s presence is seen as being a powerful force; whereas a womanââ¬â¢s presence has been depicted as being a physical emanation, a kind of heat. It has been said that from a young age a woman has been taught to constantly watch her every move, whether it be her walking across a room, or whilst weeping at the death of a loved one.To be born a woman was said to have been born within a confined space, or into the keeping of a man. Throughout history men have always surveyed a woman before they considered treating them. Consequently how a man treats a woman can be determined by many things, for instance if a woman is to throw a glass on the floor, this is how she expresses her anger towards a situation and how she would like it to be perceived by others, yet if a man was to do the same this would be read as an expression of his anger. As John Berger states in ââ¬ËWays of Seeingââ¬â¢ (P. 47) Men act and wome n appear. Men look at women.Women watch themselves being looked at. This determines not only most relations between men and women but also the relation of women themselves. ââ¬Å"The surveyor of women in herself is male: the surveyed is female. Thus she turns herself into an object and most particularly an object of vision: a sightâ⬠(John Berger ââ¬ËWays of Seeingââ¬â¢ Page. 47) Chapter 1 History of ââ¬ËThe Nudeââ¬â¢ within European oil Paintings In the history of European oil painting it has been said that women were known for being the primary and ever-recurring subject. In the subject of women they were best known for being painted in the nude.It is said that the first nudes to have been depicted in the history of art was that of Adam and Eve. John Berger has stated (P. 47) that is was worth mentioning the story of Adam and Eve as told in Genesis: ââ¬ËAnd when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof and did eat; and she gave also unto her husband with her, and he did eat. And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig-leaves together and made themselves apronsâ⬠¦.And the Lord God called unto the man and said unto him, ââ¬Å"Where are thou? â⬠And he said, ââ¬Å"I heard thy voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myselfâ⬠¦. Unto the woman God said, ââ¬Å"I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conception; in sorrow thou shalt bring forth children; and thy desire shall be to thy husband and he shall rule over theeâ⬠What is found striking about this particular story is how Adam and Eve become aware of each otherââ¬â¢s nakedness the exact moment they take a bite of the forbidden fruit, as a result of this they saw one another in a completely different way.Nakedness was created in the mind of the beholder. Wha t is also striking about this story is how the woman is blamed and made to suffer by being made to serve the man. As the traditions of paintings become more secular, other themes are offered up as an opportunity for painting nudes. But in all of them there remains the fact that the subject (a woman) is all too aware of being watched by the spectator. ââ¬ËShe is not naked as she is. She is naked as the spectator sees her. ââ¬â¢ (John Berger ââ¬ËWays of Seeing. Page. 50) Chapter 2 Susannah and the EldersSusanna and the Elders was one of the most popular images of the sixteenth century, these pieces were taken from the Old Testament story of Susanna and the Elders. The images that were done of Susanna and the Elders were depicted from specific passages from the 13th Chapter of the book of Daniel. Unlike most versions of Susanna and the Elders, the Schonborn painting presents the central confrontation between the main characters, the exact moment within the story when the Elder s return to the garden to seduce Susanna. Mary Garrard (ââ¬Å"Artemisia and Susannaâ⬠, Feminism and Art History: Questioning the Litany, Norma Broude and Mary D.Garrard, eds. , pp. 146-171) had this to say on her account of these paintings: Few artistic themes have offered so satisfying an opportunity for legitimized voyeurism as Susanna and the Elders. The subject was taken up by relish by artists from the sixteenth through eighteenth centuries as an opportunity to display the female nude, in much the same spirit that such themes as Danae or Lucretia were approached, but with the added advantage that the nude's erotic could be heightened by the presence of two lecherous old men, whose inclusion was both ichnographically justified and pornographically effective. The story of Susanna and the Elders is seen as a remarkable testament of the manââ¬â¢s ego, a biblical theme of the exemplum of a femaleââ¬â¢s chastity which shows the celebration of sexual opportunity. Or as Max Rooses enthusiastically described Rubenââ¬â¢s version of the story as a ââ¬Å"gallant enterprise mounted by two adventuresâ⬠. Peter Paul Rubens, Susanna and the Elders, 1636-40 Griselda Pollock (Differencing the Canon, p. 105) states the following on the subject of Susanna and the Elderââ¬â¢s. ââ¬Å"The biblical story of Susanna and theElders tells of a young married Jewish woman living in Babylon during the first exile of the Jewish people (after 586 BCE. ). Susanna is bathing in her garden. She sends her two maids into the house to fetch oil and perfumes for her bath. Two lecherous elders of the community spy on her, conspiring to force her to submit to them sexually. They threaten her that, if she refuses, they will denounce her of adultery with another man, adultery being, according to ancient Jewish law, a capital crime for women.Susanna refuses, preferring the fate of death to the sin they propose. She is then falsely accused by the elders and condemned to death. Daniel, of leonine fame, vindicates Susanna by exposing the elders' mendacity. Interrogating them separately, he asks them under which tree Susanna committed adultery. Each names a different kind of tree. They are then executed for the crime of false witness. â⬠This story is seen as a complex narrative of sexual desire and visual temptation.During the Renaissance the focus of the womanââ¬â¢s nakedness while bathing is exposed to a lecherous conspiracy which emphasized the sexual, voyeuristic and visually violating aspects of the theme, while at the same time providing a biblical and even a theological justification of the painting as an erotic female nude, a genre that was emerging in this period, shifting the focus of the female nude from its traditional association with truth towards a more modern signification of desire and its privileged visuality.Garrard and Pollockââ¬â¢s focus on the subject of Susanna and the Elders is of a painting based on the same subject by A rtemisia Gentileschi. Artemisa Gentileschi, Susanna and the Elders, 1610. In one of the many versions of Susanna and the Elders by Tintoretto, Susanna is seen looking at herself in the mirror. In turn she becomes the spectator herself. Tintoretto, Susanna and the Elders, 1555-56. Mary Garrard Mary Garrard (ââ¬Å"Artemisia and Susannaâ⬠, Feminism and Art History: Questioning the Litany, Norma Broude and Mary D.Garrard, eds. , pp. 149-150) presented the following on Tintorettoââ¬â¢s painting of Susanna stating: ââ¬Å"Tintoretto, whose adventurers stage their advance in a manner more sneaky than bold, nonetheless offers a representative depiction of the theme in his emphasis upon Susannaââ¬â¢s voluptuous body and upon the Eldersââ¬â¢ ingenuity in getting a closer look at it. â⬠Chapter 3 The Vanity of Women The Mirror was often used within paintings to show the vanity of women. The moralizing, however, was seen as being quite hypocritical. You painted a naked woman because you enjoy looking at her, you put a mirror in her hand and you called the painting ââ¬ËVanityââ¬â¢, thus morally condemning the woman whose nakedness you had depicted for your own pleasureâ⬠. (John Berger, ââ¬ËWays of Seeingââ¬â¢, P. 51) The main function of the mirror was to make the woman notice herself and see what men see her as, a sight. It is a well-known fact that some paintings do include a male lover. However, the womanââ¬â¢s attention isnââ¬â¢t always directed straight at him.The woman is usually panting looking away from the man or she is seen looking out of the painting supposedly looking towards her true love, or in this case the spectator-owner. In one instance of this type of theme is that of Lelyââ¬â¢s painting titled ââ¬ËNell Gwynneââ¬â¢ at painting done especially for the king of that time. In this piece it is clear that the woman is looking passively out of the painting at the spectator, in this case the spectator turns out to be the king. However, Nellââ¬â¢s nakedness was not the expression of her own feelings, but instead was the sign of her submission to the kingââ¬â¢s demands. Chapter 4 Helene Fourment in a Fur CoatOne painting that was found to be particularly fascinating was that of Rubenââ¬â¢s young second wife, who he had happily married even though he was, at the time, quite old. Rubens ââ¬ËHelene Fourment in a Fur Coatââ¬â¢ 1577-1640 In this piece we see Rubenââ¬â¢s wife in the mist of turning, as she does her fur coat begins to gradually slip off her shoulders. It is clear that if she continues with what she is doing she will not remain covered for very much longer. As her body faces us, even if it isnââ¬â¢t full frontal, it is shown as being a well experienced body. Her appearance has, in the eye of the painter, been altered bye his subjectivity. As John Berger (ââ¬ËWays of Seeingââ¬â¢, P. 61) describes ââ¬ËThere is a displacement sideways of about nine inchesà ¢â¬â¢. If looked at closely it is easy to work out that her thighs, where they are meant to join up with her hips, are seen to be at least a couple of inches apart from the left side of her body. Conclusion The ways of seeing a woman and the way they are presented within a painting have not changed. Women were depicted as being different from men, not because of the difference between feminism and masculinity, but because the spectator is often assumed to be a man and a painting of a naked woman were designed to flatter him. In the art-form of the European nude the painters and spectator-owners were usually men and the persons treated as objects, usually women. This unequal relationship is so deeply embedded in our culture that it still structures the consciousness of many women. They do to themselves what men do to them. They survey, like men, their own femininityâ⬠. (John Berger, ââ¬ËWays of Seeingââ¬â¢, P. 63) In the end what was found was quite remarkable and found that women were often observed in society as being different from a man. It just goes to show that even in paintings women will always be seen as objects and nothing more.Bibliography Books: Berger, J. (1972) Ways of Seeing. London: Penguin Books. McMillan, K. Weyes, J. Essay on The Corruption of the American Dream in The Great...
On April 10, 1925 F. Scott Fitzgerald published The Great Gatsby, a novel that would later become one of the best known pieces of classic literature in history. However, at the time of its publication, Gatsby was fairly unpopular ad the reviews were never consistent. As shocking as it may seem, I believe it is because Fitzgeraldââ¬â¢s intelligence and creativity levels were way ahead of his time, which is evident when one pays close attention to the themes of the novel. Forgiveness, love, and memory of the past are just a few themes you will come across in this story. Aside from these, there is one other theme that is much more dominant and could possibly have been the cause of The Great Gatsbyââ¬â¢s slight lack of initialâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦If you were, or are, one of those who feel this way you believe that if one does not own the fanciest clothes, the fastest cars, or the most extravagant house then they simply are not living the American dream. This materialistic aspect completely disregards happiness, family, and moral values. It is also the aspect that Fitzgerald seems to focus on the most with The Great Gatsby. In the novel, the main character, Jay Gatsby is most definitely living the American dream in the sense of materialism. He was never seen wearing less than the best of suits, and even seeing his shirts drove his love interest, Daisy to tears. ââ¬Å"Theyââ¬â¢re such beautiful shirtsâ⬠¦Iââ¬â¢ve never seen such beautiful shirtsâ⬠(Fitzgerald, p. 98). His mansion was described as looking like the Worldââ¬â¢s fair when he was throwing one of his thrilling parties. Although the only information Fitzgerald gives us about Gatsbyââ¬â¢s car is that it was a Rolls Royce (pg. 35), that is enough to tell us he was not lacking in the ââ¬Å"fastest carsâ⬠area. As for the fundamentally based ideas of the American dream, Jay Gatsby has only a few of them covered. He is certainly wealthy and prosperous. And if the fact t hat he can host a party, have the entire town attend, and repeat every weekend without ever showing his face does not scream ââ¬Å"high social statusâ⬠, I donââ¬â¢t know what does! Incarceration as a Form of Punishment - 1355 Words
Incarceration is thought of as a positive form of punishment, and negative form of punishment. The opinion varies with the type of person, and their experience from jail if they have gone. Most inmates while in prison will tell you it is a horrible place that should be gone. That would allow criminals to be free and that would let them cause harm to others or other illegal activities. Incarceration was not designed to be a paradise, it is a detention center for the bad, and meant for them to be punished. Without jails the world would be filled with even more evil, and would leave people in more danger than they already are. Incarceration is what makes those who have done bad appreciate what life has given them. ââ¬Å"While driving throughâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Having that sentence can sometimes snap the person back into reality to go back to the more responsible decisions, and to focus more on what is really important. One example of this was the experience of NFL Quarterbac k Michael Vick, and his Bad Newz Kennels incident. ââ¬Å"Thatââ¬â¢s the backdrop to the day I made the worst decision of my life; the day I stopped being a spectator of dogfighting, and instead began participating in it with vigorâ⬠(Vick 99). Vick had changed from a family man to a horrible person who was no longer worried about the important choices, but taken by greed, and brought in by the wrong friends who had him involved in dogfighting. That one friend who he had been friends with from such a young age introduced Michael Vick to his favorite activity that also brought in money. Vick being a guy who trusted him and thought highly of his friend one day decided to try it out. That was the irresponsible decision that will eventually cost him. He served a sentence of 2 years in Prison for what he was charged for. Those 2 years then changed Vick, and showed him that he no longer would follow the path of an inmate, but have the life of a family man with such a great job. Vick had decided to make the decision to appreciate his everyday life, and make the best of everything he has. He is glad to be thankful for the second chance he not only received from his family, but from the fans, and all of his teammates. It has not always been a common form of punishment. Back in the ancient world in England, France and colonial America, corporal punishment, forced labor, and social banishment were far more common forms of punishment than incarceration (ADPSR 2015). This changed with the 18th Century enlightenment in France and England. This gave rise to new interpretations on liberty, human nature and time (ADPSR 2015). An Analytical on Excessive Pride in Chinua A Essay Example For Students
An Analytical on Excessive Pride in Chinua A Essay chebes Things Fall Apart Things Fall Apart essaysExcessive Pride in Things Fall Apart In Chinua Achebes novel Things Fall Apart, a well-known aphorism, pride goes before a fall, was used. I agreed with and supported this statement. The story line itself backed up this statement as well. Through Okonkwos hard work he became a great man with a sense of pride and haughtiness, who then suffered a loss of pride, which ultimately led to his down fall and his own suicide. This book went along with the commonly stated cliche. In addition to that, there was a widely known joke that went well with this. One day there was an airplane pilot flying Bill Clinton, Bill Gates, Bill (a kid), and Billy Gram. Something went wrong with the plane, so it had to be abandoned. The airplane pilot strapped on a parachute and said to them, there is only four parachutes but I am taking one. Bill Clinton grabbed the second one and said, I am the most important man and my country needs me so I am taking one too. Then, Bill Gates grabbed the third one and said, I am the smartest man in the world and my people need me. So, Bill (a kid) was just looking at the fourth parachute and Billy Gram said to him, I am an old man and you are young, you have your whole life ahead of you, take the last parachute. Finally, Bill (a kid) looked up at him and said, I was not thinking about that, its just that the smartest man in the world took my backpack. As you saw from the book and the joke, both Okonkwo, and Bill Gates were full of prejudice pride. They thought they were great men, and saw others as inferior to them and incapable of living substantially if they were not the backbone. Okonkwos pride grew immensely when he was an eighteen-year-old boy growing up in Umuofia. His father, Unoka was a lazy and imprudent man so Okonkwo sought to be everything his father was not. He threw Amalinze the Cat, who was a wily craftsman, and great wrestler that was unbeaten for seven years from Umuofia to Mbaino. That victory made Okonkwo known past the nine villages. Later he had his own house, three wives each with their own house, became a wealthy farmer, and had two barns full of yams. Along with all of that he had two titles, showed an incredible prowess in two inter-tribal wars, and was an egwugwu otherwise called a masked spirit. Yet in the novel A Separate Peace Finny, the all around athletic character, had a lot of things going for him. He was at the peak of his life and nothing could stop him. So because of this invincible attitude Finny never stoped to think about anything, he just pursued it. The result of this was breaking his leg and ending his future dreams. Finny made no backup plans in his life to pursue so he gave up hope. This was just like when Okonkwo gave up on the world around him when things did not go as planed. Soon after, he committed suicide because he saw no future and was unwilling to compromise. Okonkwo and Finny where both blinded by their pride and would not accept reality, which concluded with their own downfall and demise. When Okonkwo was attending the funeral of Ezeudu, a noble warrior with three titles, he lost his pride at sunset when the guns fired their last salute. Okonkwos gun exploded a piece of iron that killed Ezeudus sixteen-year-old son. This was a crime against their earth goddess, so he had to flee the country for seven years and his belongings were to be destroyed to cleanse the land. .ufc01217abceda0471190a05feca385a7 , .ufc01217abceda0471190a05feca385a7 .postImageUrl , .ufc01217abceda0471190a05feca385a7 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .ufc01217abceda0471190a05feca385a7 , .ufc01217abceda0471190a05feca385a7:hover , .ufc01217abceda0471190a05feca385a7:visited , .ufc01217abceda0471190a05feca385a7:active { border:0!important; } .ufc01217abceda0471190a05feca385a7 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .ufc01217abceda0471190a05feca385a7 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .ufc01217abceda0471190a05feca385a7:active , .ufc01217abceda0471190a05feca385a7:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .ufc01217abceda0471190a05feca385a7 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .ufc01217abceda0471190a05feca385a7 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .ufc01217abceda0471190a05feca385a7 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .ufc01217abceda0471190a05feca385a7 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .ufc01217abceda0471190a05feca385a7:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .ufc01217abceda0471190a05feca385a7 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .ufc01217abceda0471190a05feca385a7 .ufc01217abceda0471190a05feca385a7-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .ufc01217abceda0471190a05feca385a7:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Pesticides Effects Essay Okonkwos pride was bruised because he had lost everything he had spent his life saving. Once his seven years were over he went back to and found the his tribe had changed vastly. His peoples new beliefs, customs, culture, religion, and society were foreign to him because they adjusted over time to the Christians ways. His world was literally turned upside-down. Okonkwos life went downhill from there, like its said in the bible, Proverbs 16:18 Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall. He surrendered to defeat when he found his people were not alongside him in getting the land back to the traditional ways. In Okonkwos mind it was better to die than to admit his pride had caused the majority of his pain. He was so blinded to his own faults that it magnified the faults of others. This did not allow Okonkwo to see what was coming and how he could have protected himself against the odds. In conclusion, from Okonkwos unwillingness to accept things that seemed to be beneath him, he ended up beneath them. He had extremely too much pride, which caused his downfall because he became so obsessed with being everything his dad was not. This caused Okonkwo to no longer care whether things were wrong or right. His pride also interfered with his ability to reason. That was why he participated in killing Ikemefuna, his adopted son, so he would not be seen as an efulefu who was to weak to be a man.

The New Liberal Arts Essay Example For Students
The New Liberal Arts Essay In his essay, angora lists seven misconceptions and how he reacts to them. The sots common misconception that angora identified is that liberal arts degrees are no longer affordable. The cost for liberal arts education is very expensive while most families are struggling with the economic is going down. Thus, the second misconception is, with a liberal arts degree, it is hard for graduates to find a good job, Moreover, liberal arts degree seems to be irrelevant and unimportant especially for low income families and first-generation college students. Other misconceptions pointed out by angora are: the STEM (science, technology, engineer, math) are what people need to learn right now instead f arts, American education system is too old-fashioned to stick with liberal arts education, and while the cost for liberal arts education is very high, the outcome of appears to show no gain in productivity for the ways graduates do their work. Finally, angora states that one of the misconception is because the United States is being led by a liberal Democrat, who seems to bring more problems to the country than solving the existing problems, so it is better for the young adolescence not to follow that same road. Among Angoras entire list of misconceptions, found several of them are strongly disagreeable because he is president off liberal arts college, so its undeniable that he holds biases, and personally, I think whether to go for a liberal arts degree is mainly an individual choice that one makes depending on their background and personal matters that they have to resolved. We will write a custom essay on The New Liberal Arts specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now First of all, his misconception number one, liberal arts are becoming unaffordable and career education is What most people focus on, is highly disagreeable because it is nowadays a fact not just a misconception. He wrote, The career bandwagon seems to suggest that shortcuts are available to students that lead directly to high-paying jobs?leaving out frills like learning owe to write and speak well, how to understand the nuances of literacy texts and scientific concepts, how to collaborate with others on research What he means by that is there is no shortcuts to a high-paying jobs. He also implies that liberal arts education is the only right way to prepare an individual for their future career because it equips ones with the abilities to write and speak formally, and understandings on scientific matter or how to cooperate with other people for workout, etc. However, I do not think he can deny the tact that the starting salary for a liberal arts graduate is approximately 532,500 while for an engineer is 75,000, (http://www. Mat. Du/engineering/outreach/welcome/salary/). For instant, what can a person possibly do with his philosophy degree right after graduating? He will probably have to go for more schooling before he can find a high-paying job at some big firms or he will have to struggle a lot before he can open his philosophy shop or publish his book. In short, a liberal arts degree will take longer to See its worth than career education or vocational training. Besides, there is certainly no such thing as not going to school and still get a decent job, but liberal arts is for sure not a smart choice for families Who are financially trundling to pay off their childrens student loans or making ends meet. Therefore, people Who say liberal arts are unaffordable and not as realistic as career education is a fact and a matter of choice that they make because oftener family background or financial situation, not because they are not equip with the right ways of thinking. Second, organ complicates the matter further when he writes, One should not, in this day and age, study only the arts. The STEM fields.. Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics are where the action is, as another misconception. .u1ce24ec40f2d8d092a2bb06f87a7566a , .u1ce24ec40f2d8d092a2bb06f87a7566a .postImageUrl , .u1ce24ec40f2d8d092a2bb06f87a7566a .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u1ce24ec40f2d8d092a2bb06f87a7566a , .u1ce24ec40f2d8d092a2bb06f87a7566a:hover , .u1ce24ec40f2d8d092a2bb06f87a7566a:visited , .u1ce24ec40f2d8d092a2bb06f87a7566a:active { border:0!important; } .u1ce24ec40f2d8d092a2bb06f87a7566a .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u1ce24ec40f2d8d092a2bb06f87a7566a { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u1ce24ec40f2d8d092a2bb06f87a7566a:active , .u1ce24ec40f2d8d092a2bb06f87a7566a:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u1ce24ec40f2d8d092a2bb06f87a7566a .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u1ce24ec40f2d8d092a2bb06f87a7566a .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u1ce24ec40f2d8d092a2bb06f87a7566a .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u1ce24ec40f2d8d092a2bb06f87a7566a .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u1ce24ec40f2d8d092a2bb06f87a7566a:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u1ce24ec40f2d8d092a2bb06f87a7566a .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u1ce24ec40f2d8d092a2bb06f87a7566a .u1ce24ec40f2d8d092a2bb06f87a7566a-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u1ce24ec40f2d8d092a2bb06f87a7566a:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Antigone: Who Is The Tragic Hero? EssayIn other words, he means that people may think liberal arts is all about arts, and science, technology, engineering and mathematics are very critical tort ones success in present. Found the first part not very agreeable while the second part of this misconception is todays popular facts. On one hand, I think organ make this argument because he overlooks that people do know what are taught in liberal arts colleges, but students chose not to attend one because they think it may be impractical for them or maybe they are uninterested. On the other hand, the STEM fields are becoming very important nowadays. Students are taught those subjects in their elementary, junior high, gig school and later on in college, which is the right time to deepen their knowledge in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. In additional, according to Charles Murray, who works at American Enterprise Institute and is an author of many articles for the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, liberal arts should not wait until college to be taught because. Murray says, Liberal education in college means taking on the tough stuffs, which means liberal education taught in college is more Of an advanced level than it is in K-12 classes. Murray also gave an example that philosophy taught in high school inform the students that Stuart Mill is the author of the book called On Liberty while students will be requested to read and understand the text in that book if philosophy is taught in college level. Greer what Murray says is the absolute truth because as a college level student who had took one philosophy course, can confirm that it requires a lot of work for that course which appears to be impractical for me because do not have any interest in becoming a philosopher. So, again, it is mainly a matter of choice it an individual choose to attend liberal arts colleges or career training courses depending on their personal aloes, beliefs and interests. Moreover, angular as a president of a liberal arts college, has his own biases. His biases s how clearly when he used the term misconception. Even though those ways of thinking are common and not true for him, it is still not a misconception. They are simply different ways of thinking caused by different backgrounds tot people, and people in different situations may view the same thing differently Murray writes, *Through immersion in liberal arts, students learn not just to make a living but also to live a life rich in values and character, Though he insists that liberal arts prepare students tit knowledge that are more than enough to get a good job, still think he exaggerates a little too much about liberal arts. If one is struggling faith their daily life, how will he be able to enjoy his life or to live a rich life in values and character? It mainly depends on each individual to see what Works for them and what does not, so the more angora argues about these so-called misconceptions, the more Of a man full Of prejudices he becomes. Lastly, Murray, in his Are TOO Many People Going to College article, points out a wary interesting fact that our society unintentionally makes the term Bachelor Of Arts appear to be superior. Murray wrote, The problem begins with the message sent to young people that they should aspire to college no matter what, meaning that not many young people attend college because that interests them, but going to college is a social norm that they have to follow or they will be classified as a lower class in our society. Totally agree with Murray because a lot of people emphasizing on going to college right now is a must, and no longer a choice. .u65dee321cb54119ff5866e4a1da1c423 , .u65dee321cb54119ff5866e4a1da1c423 .postImageUrl , .u65dee321cb54119ff5866e4a1da1c423 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u65dee321cb54119ff5866e4a1da1c423 , .u65dee321cb54119ff5866e4a1da1c423:hover , .u65dee321cb54119ff5866e4a1da1c423:visited , .u65dee321cb54119ff5866e4a1da1c423:active { border:0!important; } .u65dee321cb54119ff5866e4a1da1c423 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u65dee321cb54119ff5866e4a1da1c423 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u65dee321cb54119ff5866e4a1da1c423:active , .u65dee321cb54119ff5866e4a1da1c423:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u65dee321cb54119ff5866e4a1da1c423 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u65dee321cb54119ff5866e4a1da1c423 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u65dee321cb54119ff5866e4a1da1c423 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u65dee321cb54119ff5866e4a1da1c423 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u65dee321cb54119ff5866e4a1da1c423:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u65dee321cb54119ff5866e4a1da1c423 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u65dee321cb54119ff5866e4a1da1c423 .u65dee321cb54119ff5866e4a1da1c423-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u65dee321cb54119ff5866e4a1da1c423:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Introduction to Ancient Fine Arts EssayI have a friend that attends college with me at the same time because her parent wants her to go to college. At the first time, she said college is easy and all study about liberal art hat did not connect anything about my job, gut nowadays, she said I am not as good as I think those classes really helpful for me. She changed her mind, and now after 2 years she graduated and transfer to university which is harder level of education. She said without college maybe she will be lost when attend to university, However, again, whether to attend college is an individual choice, not a social norm. Everyone is free to choose what they want to do instead of being accused of having misconception or looked down because of their failure to attend college. In short, after reading The New Liberal Arts by Sanford J. Angora, agrees with several Of his points. According to angora, liberal arts colleges equip people with all they need for their success in the future. However, he forgot one thing that people make different decision because Of the daily issues that they encounters, and only an individual knows best what is good for them. Therefore, Whether liberal arts colleges are good choices for higher education or not depends on each individual circumstances. The best method that each individual can use when identifying which institute they want to continue on for their higher education is to listen to their heart, interest, and be true to what they love to do.
